Background of the Study
Network segmentation is a fundamental practice in network security and management that involves dividing a larger network into smaller, isolated subnetworks (segments). Each segment can have its own set of security controls, which enhances the network's performance, scalability, and security. For universities like Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State, network segmentation is crucial to maintaining control over the growing number of devices and users accessing the campus network.
By isolating traffic between departments, segments, or services, segmentation helps in reducing network congestion, minimizing broadcast traffic, and enhancing the overall security posture by preventing the spread of malicious activities. Furthermore, network segmentation allows for better management of network traffic and enhances compliance with data protection policies (Usman et al., 2023).
This study will explore the effectiveness of network segmentation at Federal University, Gashua, to assess how it can improve both security and performance, providing the university with a more efficient and secure networking environment.
Statement of the Problem
The university's network suffers from performance bottlenecks and security vulnerabilities, largely due to the lack of proper network segmentation. As the university grows and the number of devices increases, a segmented approach is necessary to ensure better resource management and prevent security breaches.
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the current network structure at Federal University, Gashua, and identify the need for segmentation.
To implement a network segmentation model and evaluate its effectiveness in improving security and performance.
To recommend optimal strategies for network segmentation based on the findings.
Research Questions
What are the current challenges related to network security and performance at Federal University, Gashua?
How does network segmentation affect the security and performance of the university's network?
What are the best practices for implementing network segmentation in the university's network infrastructure?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the implementation and evaluation of network segmentation within Federal University, Gashua, Yobe State. The limitations of the study include the potential challenges in restructuring the existing network and the need for continuous monitoring to ensure segmentation remains effective over time.
Definitions of Terms
Network Segmentation: Dividing a larger network into smaller, isolated sub-networks to improve performance, security, and management.
Subnetting: The process of dividing a network into smaller logical segments, each having its own network address.
Broadcast Traffic: Network traffic that is sent to all devices on the network, which can lead to congestion if not properly managed.
Security Posture: The overall security status and measures implemented to protect a network from vulnerabilities and attacks.
